Getting kids involved with nature is a great idea. By way of nature, kids will learn many vital nature lessons, such as appreciation for the world around them. Step #1 - Look around for Nests
To allow the kids to become familiar with bird nests and the way they look, take a walk in your yard or think about going on some hiking trails in search of bird nests. Try finding different types of bird nests so that your kids can see how they look. You'll find nests in bushes and trees, and a few birds even build nests on the ground.
Warning: Never touch the bird nests. Although it is alright to look from a safe distance, should you touch the nest, the mother might not come back to it. Be sure you keep kids from coming in contact with the nest and the eggs. It's best to keep quiet to avoid frightening the mother away.
Step #2 - Look Up Nests in Guides or Online
To get a better look at many of the nests that birds make, consider looking them up in bird guides or get online and examine some pictures. This offers kids a better look at these nests as well as the way they are built. It can be interesting to see just how different bird nests can be, depending on the bird that made them.
Step #3 - Build a Nest
Now you are set for the activity - making your own nest. You will require some modeling clay, some leaves, some sticks, string, yarn, along with other materials. Take the modeling clay and shape it into the form of a bird nest. Take the sticks, leaves, and other materials that you gathered and put them on the exterior and inside of the nest.
