Bali, Indonesia, is a great place for a romantic getaway. Bali's temples, ceremonies, beaches, mountains and the islanders' passion for life are world renowned. Many people simply see Bali as a place for cheap beer on a beach or a romantic getaway destination but it is so much more. Lush and languid, Bali beguiles one and all with its sunny charms. Bali is so picturesque that you could be fooled into you are in paradise. The island is dotted with stunning rice paddies terraces that trip down hillsides like giant steps. Bali's volcanoes tower through the clouds. The green tropical forests are lush and swarming with wildlife. The well known beaches are lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Is this not the description of paradise? What better place to go for a romantic getaway?

There are many festivals and celebrations in Bali. It is a great idea to plan for your romantic getaway to coincide with at least one of them. The Galungan Festival, Bali's major feast, is held annually throughout the island. During this 10-day period, Balinese believe that all the gods would come down to earth for the festivities and the barongs would prance from temple to temple and village to village. Barongs are lion-dog like creatures in Balinese myths. Nyepi is another major festival and usually falls towards the end of March or the beginning of April. The day before Nyepi is set aside as a day of purification across the island. The night before, all evil spirits would be noisily chased away with beating of cymbals, gongs, drums and flaming torches. On Nyepi itself, all the Balinese would usually stays quietly at home, making no noise, using no lights and doing no cooking. The idea is that when evil spirits descend upon Bali, they are fooled into thinking that the whole island is uninhabited and leave them in peace for another year. A romantic getaway to Bali is not complete without the exciting nightlife. Bali's nightlife has something for everyone. Nusa Dua in the south is where many of the 5 star hotels are located. The entertainment scene is based mainly around the resort hotels which offer live entertainment at night. Kuta is the busiest and most lively area on Bali. This is where the many bars and clubs are located. It is a great place for a great night out for those looking from more action. Seminyak offers a more sophisticated nightlife with its trendy bars, clubs and restaurants. This is a lively but more upmarket than the neighbouring Kuta. For a more laid back night out, go to Jimbaran and Sanur. The next time you consider a romantic getaway, check out Bali.

No matter what you look for in a romantic getaway, Bali has them all. From sea sports such as surfing, diving and snorkelling to monkey sanctuary and health spas.  The major activities on Bali range from the adventurous to the calm. Activities for tourists seeking a day's diversion include everything from rafting and hiking to massage spas and meditation retreats.
