Romancing The Old Stone Town
The old Stone Town is the cultural and political epicentre of Zanibar. Life in the Stone Town is almost the same as it has been for the past 200 years. In fact, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stone Town is perfect for romantic exploration to be taken in slow strolls with your partner. Take your time to explore the winding alleys in between the mosques, tea shops and busy bazaars. The best time to visit is from June to October when the weather is drier.
Stone Town was ruled by Portuguese for more than 200 years before being taken over by the Omani Sultans in the 18th century. Today, you can still find old portuguese cannons and the Suktan's Palace, which is now a museum.
Start your evening with a sundowner at the harbourfront Mecury Bar. Skip dinner and instead sample the local delights at the open air food stalls at the Forodhani Gardens.
